Evidence^(US)

Michael Taylor Perretta, beter bekend als Evidence, is een Amerikaanse MC en producer. Faam vergaren deed hij echter vooral dankzij zijn rol bij Dilated Peoples, de legendarische hip-hop crew die al sinds 1992 wereldwijd podia onveilig maakt. Evidence maakte naam voor zichzelf in de underground hip-hop scene van LA als deel van het legendarische trio Dilated Peoples, aan de zijde van Rakaa Iriscience en DJ Babu. Vanaf debuutalbum 'The Platform' (2000) zag de toekomst er veelbelovend uit. Zo vond ook All Music (****): "If it's occasionally uneven, The Platform is still better than the vast majority of its competition, and whether or not they ultimately prove to be the saviors of hip-hop (as some would have it), their promise is undeniable." Ook opvolger Expansion Team oogstte mooie woorden, bv. van Hiphop DX (****): "Overall, West Coast hip-hop needed this album to show that it ain't all hoes, highs and hitting switches. It's also about beats, brains and beautiful lyrical beat downs. The album works on all the levels that an expected hip-hop album should and, hopefully, re-introduces DP to the world of successful sales." Naast deze twee knallers van platen, brachten ze er nog drie uit: Neighborhood Watch (2004), 20/20 (2006) en The Release Party (2007) waarmee ze regelmatig in de hitlijsten verschenen.Als producer werkte Evidence mee aan tracks voor o.a. Beastie Boys, Linkin Park, Swollen Members en co-producete hij 'College Dropout', het debuutalbum van Kanye West waarvoor hij een Grammy in de wacht sleepte.Ook op z'n eentje bewees Evidence zichzelf al. In 2007 bracht hij zijn solo debuutplaat 'The Weatherman LP' uit. De productie daarvan werd onder handen genomen door niemand minder dan The Alchemist, DJ Babu, DJ Khalil en natuurlijk hemzelf. Hiphop DX (****) was alvast weer onder de indruk: "His rhymes may not be a work of scripture, but he tirelessly worked to put together his solo masterpiece and with solid guest appearances and quality production the album is definitely worth your time. [...] While being known as a rapper/producer comes with the stigma that you may not be skilled in either respect, Evidence is clearly adept at both; although his lyrics need work, he wears the title well in that respect." Ook zijn tweede plaat, 'Cats & Dogs' wordt geapprecieerd. Het is duidelijk dat Evidence zijn ziel bloot legt in elke track. Zo vindt ook About.com (****): "Each track is a glance into the inner workings of his day to day life. Each scene is layered like stills from a movie."Eerder maakte Evidence het podium al onveilig met kameraad The Alchemist, die ook samenwerkte met Dilated Peoples en Mobb Deep. Dat doet het duo onder de naam Step Brothers. Zij brengen in 2014 eindelijk het lang geanticipeerde album 'Stepmasters' uit.
