De 4 bandleden van Maps & Atlases leerden elkaar in 2004 kennen op de kunstacademie van het Columbia College Chicago. Ze gingen samen op zoek naar een sound die zowel technisch als organisch was en kwamen zo uit bij 'math rock': "Our goal was to put existing technical elements in a new context, and create something artistically unique, but still accessible."Hun muziek evolueerde verder en werd meer pop-georiënteerd, al blijft er altijd wel nog een vleugje onconventioneel muzikantschap over. De 'normalere' liedjes leverden hen vergelijkingen met TV On The Radio, Deerhoof, Vampire Weekend, Talking Heads en zelfs Prince op. Als invloed hebben ze het zowel over folk als experimentele muziek. Ze brachten 2 EP's uit voor ze in de zomer van 2010 eindelijk met hun eerste cd Perch Patchwork op de proppen kwamen. Het album kreeg een score van 7,8 op Any Decent Music, een site die reviews samenvat.
