Mary Ocher^(DE)

In januari deed FACT Magazine al de gedurfde voorspelling over The West Against The People, Mary Ochers vijfde studioalbum: "Prediction: one of the best albums of 2017'. Het album kwam in maart uit bij krautrocklabel Klangblad, en werd geproducet door Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust). Het bevat samenwerkingen met avant-gardisten Die Tödliche Doris, Felix Kubin en Julia Kent (Antony And The Johnsons). 

De titel, The West Against The People, past bij Ochers compromisloze en avant garde aanpak; ze roeit graag tegen de stroom en snijdt onderwerpen aan als autoriteit, conflict, xenofobie en gender. Bij het album hoort ook dit essay. Maar het album is véél meer dan wat controverse. Ze schippert tussen rauwe 60s garage, synth riffs uit de Berlijnse technoscene, funk, abstracte ambient met etherische stemmen, Afrikaanse en Zuid-Amerikaanse ritmes ... en het geheel hangt wonderwel samen.

It will definitely take you to some peculiar places, but The West Against the People will also leave you feeling unexpectedly satisfied, and with a whole bunch of hooks echoing through your brain along with the strange thoughts. - The Arts Desk

It’s an eccentric and boldly disparate album, channeling voices as varied as Klaus Nomi, Nina Hagen and The Knife, and marks Ocher’s second release on Klangbad, the label of krautrock pioneers Faust, whose Hans Joachim Irmler acted as producer on the LP. - FACT Mag
