Shearwater^(US)

Shearwater ( ook wel vertaalt als stormvogel) is een indie rockband uit Texas, die opgericht is in 2000 en bestaat uit Jonathan Meiburg en Will Sheff. Je kent ze waarschijnlijk nog van hun vorige band nl. Okkervil River, waar zachtere en meer melodische liedjes geen plaats kregen. Meiburg is afgestudeerd in de ornithologie, de studie van de vogelkunde. Vandaar de verwijzing naar de groepsnaam. Ook de stormvogel is terug te vinden op de cover van hun derde album Winged Life, uitgebracht in 2004. Zo deelde Pitchfork ons het volgende mee: "Winged Life boasts an even more lush, orchestrated sound that incorporates banjo, pedal steel, violin, and programmed percussion. Its music is not quite as quirky as Okkervil River, although its songs are similarly hymnlike. It's only a few shades lighter than the pitch-dark Americana of Pinetop Seven, although Meiburg and Sheff, like Darren Richards, approach lyrics with a storyteller's eye, allowing the music to bring out the tone of the words." Hun debuutalbum The Dissolving Room werd in 2001 uitgebracht door het label Grey Flat Records. Van stad tot stad trekken kan leiden tot een verbondenheid van samenwerking met verschillende artiesten zoals: St Vincent, Coldplay, Wye Oak, Clinic en vele anderen. Deze samensmelting is allemaal terug te vinden op hun nieuw coveralbum Fellow Travelers. Het is een uidaging voor een kunstenaar om zich puur te uiten en Pitchfork kon dit helemaal terug vinden in het laatste album: "Fellow Travelers can be seen as Shearwater showing their scratch work, and while great cover albums can be a revelation or an embarrassment, most end up right around here: which is to say, admirable and flawed. Few things can be tougher for an artist than to purely express themselves. Expressing what they like about another artist is often one of them."
