Phat Kat
Phat Kat (whose real name is Ron Watts) is also known worldwide by his fans as the fifth member of one of Rap/Hip Hop favorite groups, Slum Village. The Detroit native met the members of the group and a musical friendship was quickly formed. He and Jay Dee (Producer and member of the Slum Village actually formed a group together). Recalls Phat Kat In the spirit of Gang Starr, me and Jay Dee named ourselves 1st Down. The talented twosome were one of the first hip hop acts out of the Michigan area to score a deal with a major. After departing from the label due to promotion issues, Phat Kat and his friend continued to work together on projects. The release of the single Dedication To The Suckers a 3 song 12- inch, sold an impressive 5,000 copies on it first day of release! He also made appearances on Slum Villages Fan-Tas-Tic (Volume 1) Project and the Jay Dee album Welcome to Detroit. As he continued to work on his craft and perfect his style Phat Kat found himself on tour with Slum Village as well as other acts such as DAngelo, A Tribe Called Quest and as a featured guest on the Okay Player Tour with The Roots as well as The Lyricist Lounge Tour. With hip hop influences such as Whodini, KRS-One and Rakim, Phat Kat worked hard to perfect his emcee skills so that when it was his turn to unleash his brand of hip hop on the world, it would truly make a statement. And his time has arrived The Undeniable Lp features hardcore, head-nodding, infectious, energetic hip-hip and its completely sample free. Only real music was used. The result is a brutally honest collection of indisputable hits. Tracks such as Wolves (feat Slum Village) and Itz A Rap hit you off with expressive straightforward street stories. On the flip side, Dedication 2004, Club Banger and the party booty anthem Shake Shake are sure to make you move. Phat Kat, whose alter ego is Ronnie Cash, explains the difference between the two entities Ronnie Cash is who I am when I collect my money before the show or when I am taking care of my business. Phat Kat is who I become when I hit the stage. The rapper who would probably be a little league football coach if he was not rapping spends most of his time in the studio. When asked what he listens to right now in regards to music, Phat Kat confesses, I think there is a lot of garbage out there. I dont listen to much of the rap music that is being played right now. All they talk about is what they have. Right now I am still in 1995 listening to Mobb Deep, Rayquan and Nas Illmatic album. Of course, I listen to my album. Right now Im working on remixes and doing cameos on other peoples cuts, picking singles and thinking about video concepts. This album is the bait album. Its my introduction. And its Undeniable"
