Richard Buckner

Afkomstig uit Californië, maar naar Brooklyn, New York uitgeweken singer-songwriter Richard Buckner heeft al een geleidelijk groeiende maar toch succesvolle muzikale carrière. Hij brengt zijn eigen melancholisch getinte alt.country- en folk songs. Waarmee hij artiesten als Justin Vernon van ‘Bon Iver’ en Willy Vlautin van ‘Richmond Fontaine’ wist te beïnvloeden. “The Richard Buckner vibe– and that is a big influence for me. His words are just about a sound and barely about meaning, but I could find all these crazy meanings in there.. .there are lyrics that are totally heartbreaking and beautiful and heavy” - Justin Vernon of BON IVER Richard Buckner's carrière doorbraak kwam er met zijn debuutplaat “Bloomed” uit 1994 waarop hij als een rondreizende troubadour(liedjeszanger die zichzelf begeleidt) zijn no- nonsense verhalen bracht, voornamelijk onder begeleiding van zijn akoestische gitaar. Toch zijn er naast de akoestische gitaar ook andere instrumenten aanwezig op Our Blood(uit 2011), gespeeld door gastmuzikanten Steve Shelley (van ‘Sonic Youth’) en Buddy Cage (van ‘New Riders On The Purple Sage’). Richard Buckner produceerde dit album samen met JD Foster. In zijn nieuwste album surrounded dat werd gereleased in September 2013, is de essentie nog steeds melancholie. Opnieuw een rake combinatie van indie en folk. Een geslaagde zet om zijn publiek te verbreden, zonder meteen de diehard fans van het eerste uur te verliezen. 'Portrait' is één van die nummer die het hele album op een hoogtepunt brengt volgens Pitchfork: "For 20 years, Richard Buckner has elusively drifted through alt-country, electric folk, acoustic rock. Over the past decade, he has shrouded his abstract singer/songwriter music with vast, ominously serene arrangements. But no matter which way Buckner tacks, he always contrasts imagery so nonfigurative it seems shaped from vapor with tactile, oaken music. His deep-grained acoustic guitar playing is splintery as a raw plank. His voice is a long gnarled shape with a silky finish, like a sea-polished branch, and gives a roughshod impression that belies its smooth range and secure pitch. Its heaviness is most affecting when it floats vulnerably high to breathe out the merest hints of a narrative, as on "Portrait", one of many gorgeously charged songs on new discography highlight Surrounded.
