Spacid

Born in Kortrijk but nowadays living in Gent, Spacid is a multi-faceted DJ talent, record label manager and party promotor and. His early beginnings can be traced back to the days when he was spinning vinyl on his portable turntable during school lunch breaks in his first year of elementary school, mind you His musical interests encompassing genres and names as varied as classical music, Jean-Michel Jarre, new wave era club classics and Front 242 (influences which still tend to define his current DJ practice) and later welcoming new beat and house, he started spinning at local parties and weddings, until he became resident DJ in Le Caf in Kortrijk in 1991, where as an early follower of the new dance culture he played deep, garage and acid house. Together with some friends, Spacid organised his first party in 1992. It was the beginning of his involvement with party culture. A one-year stint as member of the management team of a commercial hard trance club didnt do much good for his perception of the commercial side of the club scene, but through his contacts with BWP (Bad Woofers Posse) he soon immersed himself completely in the more challenging side of dance, embracing experimental acid and early techno. 1994 saw the founding of Funky Green Aliens, a party organisation and booking agency concentrating on promoting groundbreaking music and introducing international artists to the Belgian scene. Early FGA events were highly innovating, verging on illegality and thus appealing to the imagination of discerning party-goers. Much to FGAs own surprise, their second party in Antwerp attracted no less then 2.400 eager ravers. FGA events contributed to Spacids success as a DJ and by 1997 propelled him to slots at the biggest clubs and raves in Belgium and abroad, such as Dance Valley, Ten Days Off and Kozzmozz. The small and obscure venues however still remain close to Spacids heart, as he believes thats where the music is constantly pushed forward. His search for innovation and progress is a real addiction, and in that respect its not surprising the man was already playing nu-skool electro in 1997. But electro is not his only speciality: as a DJ Spacid has been known to rock the dancefloor with versatile sets consisting of experimental electronica, nu and old skool electro, minimal and experimental techno, breakcore, ragga, jungle, acid, house and Italo disco. Hes been involved in the organization of various parties and multimedia events for many years which allows him to be on the forefront of whats cooking in electronic music, as a DJ as well as a music lover. Another of his favourite occupations is making soundscapes for experimental short films and animations. In that same year Spacid sets up his own label Radius Records. Backed by Gent-based dance label/distributor N.E.W.S., Radius aims at exposing the roots and early influences of modern electro disco. The label goes digging for the roots of the modern electro disco hype, thus not only proving that music from 20 years ago can still sound fresh and innovating but also highlighting its importance for todays electronic dance music. His quest for innovation and his reverence for the past equally transpire in his work as a DJ. He likes to think of himself as a conceptualist, fuelling his sets with an underlying thought process aimed at providing party people a good time and at the same time opening up music that is less evident to a larger public. Its no wonder he is constantly in demand both in Belgium and abroad: scan the line-up of recent parties, festivals and clubs in France, Germany, Holland, the UK, Poland and Malta and youll wonder why its taken you so long to enter Spacids universe...
