Ural Thomas àdemt ritme, en is op zijn 79ste nog niet van plan om te stoppen met muziek maken.
De zanger uit Portland trad in de jaren '50, '60 en '70 op met Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding en James Brown. De afgelopen 20 jaar hield hij thuis in Portland jamsessies en werd hij een mentor voor jonge artiesten. “If you care about what you’re doing, you need to build those muscles and do the work. Don’t get discouraged, do it for love. Even if you’re digging ditches, do it with passion.”
In 2014 overtuigde drummer Scott Magee Ural Thomas om een band samen te stellen en zijn muziekcarrière een nieuwe kans te geven. Hun soul en R&B behoren tot de top van de muziekscene in Portland; hoog tijd voor een debuutalbum! The Right Time kwam in september uit bij Tender Loving Empire. Thomas en zijn Pains houden er een druk tourschema op na, maar dat deert hem niet: "The communication with people, there's nothing like it. Without the people, it's just not as much fun. We create amongst ourselves and then we share it with others and we get such good responses."
Over zijn late bloei als muzikant: "Take that step and move right in and don't look back. It's there. And like I say, 'God has given gifts to all of us and few will reach out and grab it.' If it's music or building a building or whatever it is, just go for it with all that you have—you have nothing to lose when you're striving to be happy or making someone else happy." Een schone mens!
